What was the Joyous Guard?
Bamburgh Castle which is said to be once the Joyous Gard is one of Englands most beautiful castles that is set on the edge of coast of Northumberland. This amazing castle, as it stands today, according to articledashboard.com, this castle has appeared in many films including "Becket", and "The Tragedy of MacBeth" and was later featured as the ancestral home of Uhtred in Bernard Cornwell's, "The Last Kingdom", "The Pale Horseman", "The Lords Of the North" and "Sword Song", and as I said before was though to be the site of Lancelot's castle, The Joyous Gard. Now on to the history of the Joyous Gard. Before Lancelot's conquering the castle was said to be named Dolorous Guard, and then eventually returned the castle to its former name after his affair with Guinevere was revealed. Some sources say that Arthur had Joyous Gard razed. And the location is still unknown but Malory specifically suggest the castle of Bamburgh, and he suggests that the Bamburgh castle sits upon the ruins of the Joyous Gard. (Arthurian Name Dictionary)
Now in modern days, many people believe that this castle had the same layout on the inside as the Joyous Gard but of course many things have changed dramatically because of the new technology and many other things. Today, sources say that the Bamburgh castle is one of the most top places that tourist like to visit because of the legend behind it and the stories that they've heard.
